Summer Learning Journey - Week 1 Day 3 Activity 2: The Secretive Skink

Activity 2: The Secretive Skink [4 points]
We have a number of small lizards (geckos and skinks) living in New Zealand. One of the least common is the Chevron Skink. According to the Department of Conservation, Chevron Skinks live mostly on two islands - Great Barrier Island and Little Barrier Island. These islands are ‘animal reserves.’ Very few people, other than staff working for the New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC), are allowed to live there. The DOC staff are called ‘Rangers.’ Their job is to protect the wildlife (animals and plants) living on the island.

Would you like to be a DOC ranger and live with the animals on Great Barrier Island?
list three pros (good things) and three cons (bad things) about working as a DOC ranger. At the bottom of your post, tell us whether you would like to be a DOC Ranger or not.
I think that being a DOC wouldn't be so bad. I would love to be a DOC ranger because animals are special to life. Without any DOC rangers, we would not have such beautiful creatures. Animals are talented which makes people happy. Such as birds, monkies and lizards are friendly creatures that can entertain us.

Kia ora Tyra,

My name is Rachel and I am working with the Summer Learning Journey (SLJ) team this year. Is it great to see that you are actively participating in the SLJ! I have the opportunity to read student's posts today and provide comments. After reading through all of your great work, I am thrilled that I have the chance to comment on your post about becoming a DOC ranger. Like you, I think that it would be quite an interesting job because animals really are quite special, aren't they? Do you have any pets?

I have a special cat named Jackson and he is very sweet. We got him two years ago from the SPCA and we've really enjoyed having him ever since. When he came to us he had lived in a carpark for a year so he was a little bit nervous but, after a short period of time, he grew accustomed to our house and is now the most affectionate and loving cat that we have ever had. In fact, we just celebrated Christmas as a family and he spend the entire morning curled up on our laps, purring and watching people open gifts. It was quite sweet!

I hope that you have also had a really lovely morning with your family and friends.

Hope to see you back online again when you have the opportunity!

Cheers,
Rachel :)
