Summer Learning Journey - Week 1 Day 2 Activity 3: Weird And Wonderful

Activity 3: Weird and Wonderful [10 points]
New Zealand is just one of many countries that has amazing plants and trees. In fact, the African desert is home to some pretty incredible plants, like the cactus. Some cacti are able to survive on as little as 3 milliliters (ml) of water a day. Wow!
Let’s imagine that you are given a cactus for your birthday. To keep it alive, you must give it 3 ml of water every day.
Over one full year, how much water will you need to give your cactus plant?
tell us how to solve this math problem. You can write your answer in words, use a Sketchpad image, or post a video explaining how you would figure it out. Be sure to give us your final answer in milliliters (ml).
Maths Stratergy (Place Value Partitioning):
(1 year = 365 days)
365 x 3ml = 1095
(300 x 3ml) + (60 x 3ml) + (5 x 3ml) =
900ml + 180ml + 15ml = 1095

Kia ora Tyra,

WOW, I am really impressed with the way you have written down the strategy for this maths problem. You have thought carefully about the different place values in the number '365' and divided it into three chunks; 300, 60 and 5.

This was an easier way to approach this multiplication problem. Tino pai! Do you enjoy problem solving? What is your favourite subject at school? I would love to know.

Bonus question: If you had to change your answer (1,095 ml) into litres (L), what would your answer be?

I look forward to your reply,
Susie
