Activity 2: The Plastic Pledge [4 points]
Over the past few decades some of New Zealand’s beaches have become dumping grounds for waste and rubbish. Almost 80% of this waste is made up of plastic items. Yikes!
Some companies in New Zealand have heard about the problem and agreed to cut down on their use of plastic. Countdown supermarkets, for example, have announced that they will stop giving out plastic bags to customers. What do you think of this idea? What do your friends and family think? Is it a good idea or not?
For this activity, please ask one member of your family and/or a friend what they think about Countdown’s decision to go ‘plastic bag free.’
On your blog, tell us what they think about Countdown’s decision to stop using plastic bags.
I think that it would be a good idea to get rid of plastic bags at Countdown because many people do not always throw there plastic bags in the rubbish. It is most likely for people to liter so they could be doing that with their plastic bags and will be found either on shore or in the ocean.
Did you know?
When you throw your plastic bag away the rain can possibly send it down a drain which leads to the ocean. Turtles eat Jelly fish so if they spot your plastic bag they will think it is jelly fish.

Hi again Tyra
Thanks for sharing your opinions on the banning of the plastic bags. I completely agree that they should be banned. i am glad that as of January 1st all major supermarkets have stopped using them. It is a great start.
What do your family use instead of plastic bags? We have the reusable canvas ones.
Did you know that it takes about 500 years for single use plastic bags to break down. After this time, they don't even break down completely. The just separate into micro-plastics and toxins which keep polluting the earth.
Blog you later,
Izzy
